Our History
Central Sires started in 1989 when Ivan Grant and Barry Monson came back from a North American trip. There they saw clubs in the USA states prove a group of bulls . If a bull came up with a Proof he was leased to an AI company and distributed anywhere with the profits going back to the clubs or people who had initially used the bull. They put it to their local club Central Gippsland Jersey Breeders and they thought it a good idea . It started out with just club members but over a couple of years it was found to be beneficial to become a co-operative to make it easier to distribute profits and being our club it became Central Sires. The aim was to provide a wider selection of sires and further distribution of semen to farmers. The Co-Op also wanted to support financially jersey activities wherever possible with created profits
Our first secretary was Geoff Smethurst who spent considerable time in setting Central sires up as a co-operative
Our first bull failed to produce semen. So it took a couple of years to get started. In the 90s we imported several live bulls from the US as it was felt that the need to improve the genetics here would be faster by doing this. One year we had 4 bulls ranked in the top 10 in Australia I might add it was not without a lot of scepticism from some of our fellow breeders and within the industry
A contracted partnership was formed with Loren Ruth in the USA who owned the Stony Run stud in the US. Loren sourced live bulls for us to import. These cost quite a deal of money to have shipped to Australia so our local breeders bought shares in each bull imported and if the bull returned a profit the breeder who had invested in that bull was paid a dividend.
Because of the cost involved Loren began sourcing embryos and sending them to Central Sires. The embryos were put into local breeders herds and the resulting progeny were registered under the STONY RUN AUS prefix. Stony Run Aus is now managed by Araluen Park Jerseys
Ivan Grant one our original members by this time was running Jersey Marketing and was also getting embryos to sell in Australia. The BIE syndicate bought some of these which resulted in one of Central Sires most successful bulls in BIE BISTAR
Most years 4-6 young bulls were selected to be proven with Geoff Kirton from Echuca given the task of getting nasis codes and distributing semen. In 2000 after much investigation a partnership with ABS Australia was formed who then took over the distribution of semen.
